Minnesota DHS Announces Retention Bonuses for Direct Support Professionals
The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) recently announced a new workforce development program that includes retention bonuses for direct care workers who provide Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to people with disabilities and older adults.
What is a retention bonus?
The retention bonus is up to two (2) payouts of $575 each. Bonuses are distributed by DHS, not from provider agencies like PICS. Please refer to MN DHS Retention Bonus for further details.
Who can qualify?

Direct care workers of HCBS for people with disabilities and older adults for at least two (2) tax years with the same person or provider agency, and,
- Earn 300% or less of the federal poverty level after taxes.
Please review the 2023 poverty guidelines listed below to determine your financial eligibility.
PICS cannot determine your eligibility for the retention bonuses. We encourage you to review your personal records and W-2 statements from recent tax years for all information needed on your application.
How do I apply?
Retention Bonuses can be applied between April 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023.
If you believe you are eligible, visit MN DHS Retention Bonus, scroll down to “How to Apply,” and click the “Apply Now” blue button. To verify that you work as a direct care provider of HCBS services, you will be asked to submit your 2021 and 2022 W-2 Wage and Tax Statements. Please contact PICS Payroll at payroll@picsmn.org or 651.967.5065 if you are not able to locate your tax information.
